Dung Beetle - Onitis alexis - female

Dung Beetle - Onitis alexis - Female
Ramona, San Diego County, California, USA
October 16, 2006
Size: 16 mm
I believe this is Onitis alexis. Lack of the hooked spines on the hind femora (a little hard to see in this picture!) suggests a female. Identified with "Introduction to California Beetles" by Evans and Hogue. There were quite a few specimens at a gas station with very bright lights. This was on the East end of Ramona, an agricultural town.
