Dicaelus pupuratus - Dicaelus purpuratus - Pocomoke River State Park, Worcester County, Maryland, USA July 31, 2006 Size: 28 mm
Dead inside campground bathroom surrounded by mixed (oak, hickory, loblolly pine, sweet gum) sandy forest. Possibly had been attracted to light and then got trapped inside? I was trying to post an image with a good view of the mouthparts. Typically the mandibles are very hard to spread with this species but in this case (maybe because the beetle was damaged- likely stepped on - note the big crack left side of the pronotum) they were easy to separate. Note: you must first obtain a permit to collect insect in Maryland State Parks and State Forests.
