Necrophila americana - American Carrion Beetle is climbing up a plant on a beach on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It approaches some pea aphids in this photo. In the next photo it has decided it was not interested in the pea aphids, but continues to climb the plant. Why continue up a plant if you eat carrion?

Maybe it could smell better from higher up on the plant?
