Moth Late December - Operophtera bruceata

Moth Late December - Operophtera bruceata
Burlington, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
December 17, 2007
We had 2 days in the 40 and 50's and this moth came to my porch light on Dec 17th. Very late in the season, yes? I have no idea what type of moth this is.

Hi Gary, that looks like it's
Hi Gary, that looks like it's right...

how can I be sure to get the ID correct between autumnata and bruceata?

Nina

Not really sure here
Hi Nina,

Flight time would be best way for me. Seems you date fits Operophtera bruceata more so. Also, your critter is quite dark which may be an indication of Operophtera bruceata.

Perhaps Bob P. or J.D. will pop in and give us a hand here.

Bruce Spanworm
because... the forewing terminal line is a series of single dots, not double dots as in Autumnal Moth. I've added more descriptive info to the Identification and See Also sections of the Autumnal Moth and Bruce Spanworm pages for future reference.
