Male Dance Fly with ??? under its body - Empis barbatoides - Male
White City, Jackson County, Oregon, USA
March 9, 2019
Size: 1/2" long
I found this Dance Fly on some teasel. It was very intent and didn't move unless I got too close. I have never seen the organ that's showing under the fly.
I would love to know what it is. Thank you Ken, for your help identifying this insect!

Dance Fly. Thinking it's probably a male, based on this shot:

Thank you!
Ken, I really appreciate your help figuring out what type of fly this is. I wonder what that thing is underneath? Do you suppose it gives off a chemical scent to attract females?

So interesting! :)
