That with the marking is a good question. If anywhere, only on the carapace, I would think. I don't know about nail polish -- perhaps a water-based acrylic? Certainly nothing with organic solvents, I would think.

Pity that the otherwise good images don't get any closer. Platnick & Ubick (2008) have good drawings of the pedipalpae.

question as to why the size says its not a reclus is it to big or to small?

This is totally a guess. This spider resembles the Brown Recluse Loxosceles reclusa, so I am guessing it may be something in that genus. Some species in California are L. unicolor, L. laeta, L. arizonica, and L. refuscens. (reclusa is not found in CA) It looks most similar to Loxosceles laeta from this page http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/ento/venomousspiders.htm to me.

Wrong.

At the size you indicated, it can't possibly be a Loxosceles. It is a male spider of some kind, evidenced by the modified palps. Need to see the eye arrangement to get to family even. Sorry.

Size

Brinn, spiders are measured by the length of their body only....legs are not included. I would guess that yours is a little over half an inch or about 12mm. But you're right with those long legs it's over 2 inches!
