Bittacus chlorostigma mating - Bittacus chlorostigma - male - female

Bittacus chlorostigma mating - Bittacus chlorostigma - Male Female
Sandy Flat Campground, Kern County, California, USA
May 9, 2003
The male (red and yellow insect in the right foreground), and the female he is coupled with (pale yellow insect in left background) is feeding on a crane fly (dark insect at top). The crane fly is a "nuptial gift" presented to the female by the male. Nuptial gift giving is common in the reproductive behavior of scorpionflies. Species identification was made by Dr. George Byers, University of Kansas from specimens I collected at this locality. Only a few species of hangingflies occur in California and this is perhaps the most common.
