Size: ~14mm
More unseasonably warm weather and I found this specimen just one meter away fron the location of.... http://bugguide.net/node/view/163645 this yellowjacket.
This looks like a male Vespula flavopilosa

Boy, I was...
wrong again :^(. Thanks for the correct ID! This male posed nicely for me until I started getting the close up face shots. It has been a very unusual year here as far as the weather goes.
