Protoproutia - Protoproutia laredoata - female

Protoproutia - Protoproutia laredoata - Female
1.3 Miles NW of Camp Wood, Edwards County, Texas, USA
March 23, 2019
This is the first one I have had that photographed with so many markings, especially the abdominal markings. I am still not sure whether I have Protoproutia laredoata or Protoproutia rusticaria, or both! The MPG range for P. laredoata is not accurate. Ordinarily I think I have the more Western species at our place, but both have been recorded in Texas as far West as Brewster.

August 16, 2019
I sent two specimens to BOLD and both were placed in the same BIN along with others from the Brownsville area. They all matched each other almost perfectly and the nearest BIN was a BIN of Protoproutia rusticaria from Arizona.

This specimen is TXLEP715-19 and is in BIN BOLD:ABW8292. My comparison with the Arizona P. rusticaria was off by 23 characters - only a 96% match.

HOWEVER, when I used only the 307 coi length of mine and compared it to LNAUS1223-13 which is identified at the Smithsonian as Protoproutia laredoata, it matched the Arizona Protoproutia rusticaria better than mine for just that length. So I compared the same Smithsonian P. laredoata with the same Arizona P. rusticaria over the 305 coi length and they were ONLY 1 LETTER off.

GO FIGURE!

Moved from Protoproutia.

Tentative ID based on size and wing darker wing base. Seems supported by DNA as it is not in the BIN group for laredoata.

Size?
I think this along with all the rest in BOLD:ABW8292 are rusticaria and that the barcoded laredoata are misidentified.

Not sure if size is diagnostic but P. laredoata WS = ~20mm and rusticaria WS = ~16mm.

MPG only shows one data point for laredoata, a record from Vernon Brau. He's pretty careful with his identifications though it does seem unlikely.

WS
Hello Steve,

I reared a batch this year and the WS appears to be apx. 16-17. One of them will be in my next Microplate for BOLD, so if it is placed in the same BIN with my others, I think your identification is the correct one. We now have plenty of consistent DNA.

Oops
Looks like I messed up. BOLD:ABW8292 (TX only - hindwing with poorly defined lines and dark base) should be laredoata and BOLD:ABA1188 (TX and AZ - hindwing with well defined lines and pale base) should be rusticaria.

I can't explain the small size you reported. Maybe you have both species?

You should disregard LNAUS1223-13. I agree with the identification but if it had a complete sequence, I'm betting it would not be close to AZ specimens. At 307 bp, little can be said with confidence.

.
My latest microplate got into the queue at BOLD before they closed. I have some dissections if they would help.

Sure
Send me what you have if it's not too inconvenient. Should be interesting to see what happens.
