Very grateful for the prompt ID. I've got a few other bug pix that I will submit now that I know about bugguide.net and its superpowers!
BTW the Wikipedia page about Paragus haemorrhous seems a little thin and possibly underestimates the range of this species.
FYI my web post about this fly is at https://chavezpark.org/new-wildflower/

Moved
Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Paragus haemorrhous ..... fem
Paragus haemorrhous ..... female.
Note the re-entrant upper outer cross-vein, the porrect antennae with long third antennal segment. Note eyes completely hairy and hairs not forming stripes..

I'm taking a wild guess that it's a Hadromyia pulchra based on your photo of a similar bug. Am I right?

The experts will let you know.
