Pueblo, at the Nature & Wildlife Discovery Center on the Arkansas River, Pueblo County, Colorado, USA
March 27, 2019
Size: ~1 cm
This insect was found by a friend in the Arkansas river, during a class on aquatic invertebrates at the Nature & Wildlife Discovery Center in Pueblo, CO. The most I could guess is that it looks like a beetle, but I'm not even confident on that. I'm guessing that it's not an insect that's "supposed" to be in the river, though my friend said that it was alive when they caught it. For size reference, it is sitting on a standard plastic spoon. Any ID assistance would be much appreciated!

You're right, it's not an aquatic insect. These tend to be fairly rare, spending much of their time underground.
