red-and-black leafhopper - Cuerna striata

red-and-black leafhopper - Cuerna striata
near Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada
September 3, 2004
Size: about 8 mm
On raspberry in weedy field. I think the odds are better of this one being C. striata (which has a more northern distribution) than C. costalis [=lateralis] which is more southern and apparently doesn't reach Canada. I haven't seen photos of C. septentrionalis though, and don't know its range.

Cuerna striata
This species looks just like C. septrionalis, but is found in more temperate zones. For example, in New Brunswick, the latter is known only from boreal forest.
