Cotton Seed Bug - Oxycarenus hyalinipennis Santa Ana Mountains, Orange County, California, USA March 19, 2019 Size: ~ 4 mm
Oxycarenus hyalinipennis
Feeds on plants in the mallow family (Malvaceae) and is a pest on cotton (Gossypium spp.).
The closest cotton fields are in eastern Riverside County and northern Kern County.
O. hyalinipennis was first described from Italy, but has since invaded many parts of the world, including large parts of the Caribbean and South America.
This appears to be the first record for North America (excluding an reportedly extirpated colony in southern Florida).
Our warming planet pushes species to higher latitudes (and altitudes).
This specimen was more than 80 miles north of the Mexican border and there is a lot of mallow (Malva spp.) in disturbed/urban areas along the coast, all the way to the border.
But I haven't found any published records for Mexico and arid Baja California seems an unlikely route for O. hyalinipennis to travel.
Could this be a local introduction ?
Perhaps on a cultivated Hibiscus sp. ?
