Sesia spartani (Eichlin & Taft) - Sesia spartani - male

Sesia spartani (Eichlin & Taft) - Sesia spartani - Male
Bath/Rose Lake Wildlife Research Area, Shiawassee County, Michigan, USA
June 1, 1987
Size: wing lenght is 8-9 mm
Sesia spartani (Eichlin & Taft) was first collected as a series of 30 moths from south central Michigan in 1987. Tom Eichlin and I discribed the new species in 1988 (J.Lepid.Soc. 42(3)). This species has since been collected in Northern Wisconsin and British Columbia. It is associated with aspen thickets and is closely related to Sesia tibialis which flys later in the season than S. spartani. The image of both species (plus many others) can be found in North Central Regional Publication-NCR 394 called "A Guide to the Clearwing Borers (Sesiidae) of the North Central United States" which is available through the extension service at this link. http://web2.msue.msu.edu/bulletins/inventorysearch.cfm

A fine addition to Bug Guide
