Beetle - Tetratoma tessellata

Beetle - Tetratoma tessellata
Tippecanoe County, Indiana, USA
August 31, 2007
Size: ~ 3.5 mm
An unknown beetle. Not sure even what family to start with. Looks somewhat like a Myce*tophagid but I don't think that's it.

Moved
Moved from Tetratoma.

tetratomid?
Brad,

I think this is a Tetratoma. Let me do some digging.

Specimens
I checked our museum (UW-Madison) holdings for Tetratomidae earlier. This image matches very well (from what I can see) with specimens of what we have as Tetratoma tessellata. I don't know what some of the other Tetratoma look like. So, I would feel relatively safe in placing it as Tetratoma sp.

BTW. Nice find.

Finds:
Nearctica lists it as Abstrulia tessellata Melsheimer 1844, together with a second species.
ITIS lists Abstrulia as a subgenus, with a 3rd, newly described species in it, too.

Thanks for looking at this
It keys easily to Tetratoma in American Beetles, which lists 5 species with one of those being western (T. concolor). That species and T. truncorum are have images at the MCZ site here. This leaves T. tessellata, T. variegata, and T. longipennis. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the second volume of Downie & Arnett, which would probably key these out.

Checked
Checked this versus material in PU collection and it matches T. tessellata, as Jeff said. Moving to species page.
