Size: 5mm
Found this and several other rove beetles out walking around on the ice of a frozen swamp. The primary vegetation was cattails, with a few winterberry and purple loostrife.

This was right in my back yard. I've found a number of really good bugs, including a North American record from my yard. You don't always have to go far to find a surprise.

Keys right out in Jan Klimaszewski's revision. A rarely collected species.

Gymnusa sp.
I'd never have thought this was an Aleocharine. I checked the UNH data base, and they list 2 species, atra and grandiceps. Thanks for getting it down to genus. Now we'll see if Don can nail down the species.

Never found one of these rare, but characteristic Aleocharines - genus Gymnusa (information here.
Will have to be keyed to species (6 listed in Nearctica)
