Phidippus audax - female

Phidippus audax - Female
Wakulla County, Florida, USA
Size: BL 21mm/16mm
Size comparison in audax.

The smaller female has a 16mm body length, and is the typical size of audax in peninsular FL and the rest of the NA. 16mm body length is more or less the average size of many commonly encountered Phidippus species in NA.

The larger female has a 21mm body length, and represents a large size variation that occurs in north FL and the panhandle, and primarily southern areas of bordering states. Females in this area also mature at smaller sizes, and there is significant size variation in adult males from this area as well. The size variation seen in north FL audax is normal for species such regius and otiosus throughout their known ranges. Audax in the north FL area are also unique in having striking coloration and markings.
