Cyclophora packardi

Cyclophora packardi
Pine Brook, Isanti County, Minnesota, USA
Size: ~ 20 mm.
A 9-4-02 light captured female laid eggs. The caterpillars appeared to accept only oak from a considerable list of hardwoods offered, and preferred bur oak strongly over northern pin oak. The batch-reared larvae came in tan and green forms and were photographed 9-23 at about 20 mm length (instar here uncertain but surely either penultimate or final). Chrysalid-like pupae were formed by about 9-28. Apparently the pupae failed to enter normal winter diapause and an adult was found eclosed 10-7 and many more by 10-13. I think the adult shown is an eclosion rather than the parent female but my notes are not entirely clear.
