Looks like it could be Ampedus rubricus.

I have pix showing the black
I have pix showing the black areas of the pronotum toward the front, although this species could have a variable pattern of black on the pronutum. How long was this beetle? A. rubricus ranges 7 - 9 mm according to Dillons, who also say the basal 3 segments of antennae and tarsi are somewhat lighter in color.

 
probably not Ampedus rubricus
The size was in the right range of about 8mm, but like you noticed, the black markings were in the wrong place.
This other one has the markings on the front of the pronotum.

Yes, that's the same as the beetle I photographed. I just collected some like your recent beetle yesterday and hope to shoot them this evening, so I'm interested in learning the ID too.
