Black beetle under pine bark - Cibdelis blaschkei

Black beetle under pine bark - Cibdelis blaschkei
Briones Regional Park, Martinez CA, ContA Costa County, California, USA
January 13, 2008
Size: 10-16 mm
These beetles were found under the bark of a fallen Grey Pine in a canyon of mixed Oak, Bay, Calif. Buckeye, Madrone , Big leaf maple and Grey Pines. They are hibernating (Temp around 55 degrees, but it has been very rainy and cold.) Their legs (tucked under their bodies) are partially "gold' colored. Any help identifing is appreciated. Although all are adult bettles they varied in size from 10-16 mm. The spider in the upper right hand corner was an extra I only noticed when I down loaded the picture. I used to think I had great powers of observation...moments like this make me humble.
