What kind of wasp is this? - Dielis trifasciata - Male
Miami, Miami-dade County, Florida, USA
April 16, 2019
Size: 1/2 inch - 3/4 inch
These wasps started to appear in my butterfly garden a couple of months ago and they have reproduced significantly since then. They are usually found on leaves of red pentas plants. They fly quick and usually return to the same spot. They haven't been aggressive towards me so far but I'm a little worried since they are increasing in number. Can anyone identify these wasps? Should I leave them alone or try to get rid of them? Thanks in advance.

No need for alarm. :)

This is a scoliid wasp. These wasps are solitary, and their larvae feed on ground-dwelling grubs. There is no "hive" to defend, so these wasps are not territorial or aggressive. To get stung, you'd probably have to grab or step on one.

Others may be able to take the ID further. In the meantime, you can read about the family by clicking on the Info tab.

Great to know! Thank you for your response. I have one question though. You said they're solitary, however, I see most of them are in groups.

They're in the same place...
...because their prey is there. They don't cooperate in any way, however.

That's interesting. Thanks ag
