Keyed
This DOES key out to Epantius, and there is only one species in California!

just a guess
so it looks Tenebrioninae and I think it is Eulabini, Epantius obscurus. I've never seen specimens of this and I don't know their habitat, but the type has been imaged by Harvard MCZ. The type is really dirty, but antennae, eyes, pronotum, and venter seem similar.
