Hi Tom, Was just browsing
Hi Tom,
Was just browsing around and noticed I spelled the species name incorrectly! The correct spelling is jocosus.

I thought this was different than the one it mimics, because of the puncturation and the color wasn't as crisp. Thanks for the id, and I'll save it.

Staphylininae: Neobisnius jucundus
Not common. The only one with this color pattern this far north, though it is a common color pattern for southern species. Save for me please.

Not jucundus...
This is a much better match for jocusus: note the size is large (5-5.5mm vs the tiny jucundus (3.5-3.7mm), the head is more squarish and wider posteriorly (vs the elongate shape in jucundus), the maxillary palpi are completely pale (darkened apically in jucundus) and the pale margin of the elytra is incredibly thin (much wider in jucundus and often creeping up the corners too). This species is known from the NE US but not Canada..yet.
Very nice photo Tom

convincing mimic
of species from the poisonous genus Paederus,
but belonging to Staphylininae subfamily, probably.
Some resemblance to Bis*nius blan*dus, but not the same, even not on genus level (extensive puncturation on pronotum I think does not fit Bis*nius).

looks
like a Neobisni*us to me, but I don't remember a member with this color pattern being so far north. Will check collection today while doing other things. There are species in (I think) three different staphylinine genera with this color pattern, which presumeably mimics that of Pae*derus.
