The long "beak" looks like Stable Fly (Stomoxys calcitrans)

looks like a
Muscidae. Helpful if you can see whether the Meron has a row of bristles. No need to get a photo, just take a close look at the fly:

Thanks Tony, unfortunately I didn't retain the specimen. I looked at other images taken at the time, but none of them showed the meron.

Your stacked images are magnificent! Each one seems to be better than the previous one. Generally, in the past I have preferred drawings to photographs for illustrations that identify small details, but your photos leave drawings in the dust.
