tussock moth caterpillar?
Hickory Tussock Moth - Hodges#8211 (Lophocampa caryae)?

has some similar features, but no data points for S Carolina so far, although many submitted for neighboring states.

Here is a starting point, and maybe other pictures will look more like your specimen, since tussock moth cats have the distinctive fuzzy "horns" at both ends
