Yellow-faced webspinning sawfly - Acantholyda erythrocephala - male

Yellow-faced webspinning sawfly - Acantholyda erythrocephala - Male
Killarney Provincial Park, Manitoulin, Ontario, Canada
May 15, 2019
Size: 1.2 cm
Found floundering on George Lake. Unfortunately I was unable to collect the specimen as this was in a protected area. ID is Pamphilius sp. from what I can see in the photos. Appears to be a species not yet pictured in the Guide.

Acantholyda erythrocephala?
I just collected 2 males (like this one in the photo, not a female) along with a female on a Mugo pine here in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I think this is the "red-headed pine sawfly". The females are much more recognizable though the males are also distinctive. Just the same, I am not familiar with all Nearctic species. Photos #874097 & -98 represent the only male among the photos gathered under that name.

I think you must be right!
Thank you! I'm afraid I'm not very good with pamphiliids (though I'd like to think there's a better chance I'd at least have got the right genus if I submitted this yesterday!). Acantholyda erythrocephala it is.

Cropping the pics...
...would allow site visitors to get a better look at the critter. Only you and the editors have the ability to view the full-size images. Everyone else is left looking at a little sawfly in a lot of unnecessary background. :)

You can click on "edit" under each pic and simply upload a cropped version. It will replace the current image.

Thanks!

Noted, thanks!
They'd already been cropped, but evidently I overestimated the display size. I've cropped them closer now. A shame the full-size view is not available to all users!

Lookin' good
Thanks!
