HUGE Rove Beetle?

HUGE Rove Beetle?
Morris County, New Jersey, USA
May 20, 2019
Size: 3”
This was at the bottom of the pool. Looked almost like a crayfish when in the water, thought maybe a bird plucked one from the river down below and dropped it. At first thought it was a salamander drowning too. Around 3-4” so very big. Never have I seen anything like this before in the area. When scooped up it curled up into a ball. Have video of it too.

Looks like a dobsonfly larva

Something in that neighborhood, at least.

Welcome to BugGuide!

Thanks!
I never would have figured that one out. What doesn’t make sense is how it made it all the way up to the pool. It is about 50 feet from the river/lake area and up a 15 foot rock wall. What is really interesting is we had massive thunderstorms all last night. Reading on Wikipedia just now saw this;
“Although the larvae spend most of their lives under rocks below water, locals along Virginia and Pennsylvania rivers have reported emergences, known as "hellgrammite crawlings," during thunderstorms.”

You're welcome :)
I'd like to see a "hellgrammite crawling." Sounds cool.
