Small Crane Fly - Protanyderus vipio - male

Small Crane Fly - Protanyderus vipio - Male
Eugene, Lane County, Oregon, USA
May 22, 2019
Size: 8mm
What led me to catching this crane fly was actually the visibly wide rear end(hypopygium?). Whatever it is, I know it's not an ovipositor. The wings are quite interesting as well with the seemingly random splattering of black. It's much smaller than the typical 2cm crane fly that is always seen in tall grassy plants. I found this one hanging onto some tree leaves above my head, about 10ft from the river.
