Some sort of beetle, maybe a true bug? I know i've seen these here on this site but I can't remember a thing about them.

Pentatomidae
This is a pentatomid. At least some coreids (leaf-footed bugs) are also defensively aromatic.

Stink Bugs
You know, I've never smelled a stink bug yet, and I've picked them up many times. Do they really stink?

 
great bug-side manner
You must have a very non-threatening bug-side manner! But keep picking them up and you'll get a whiff one of these days.

Looks like a Brown Stink bug...don't pick it up:)
