Texas SE Gulf Coast - Toxomerus... - Toxomerus mutuus - Female
Lake Jackson, Brazoria County, Texas, USA
January 25, 2015
I took these images while casually shooting insects nectaring on Ligularia gigantea (my excuse for poor image quality). Slapped the observation on iNaturalist as T. marginatus. Recently upupa_epops (Caleb) suggested that this was not good ol’ marginatus. I sent the images to Martin Hauser who agreed that it matched no known US-Canada species.

After sleuthing journals and a flurry of emails among several experts this appears to be closest to T. mutuus, known from Mexico, based on abdominal pattern only. Of course, no hard species designation can be made on the basis of these two images, but I thought it should be shared with the BugGuide community in case others are collected from Texas or states adjoining Mexico.

Thanks to Dr. Ximo Mengual for comparing these images to Toxomerus mutuus specimens in his and other collections and for his opinion that this was Toxomerus mutuus..

New page created at the suggestion of Bill Dean and Martin Hauser. Dr. Hauser states, in part, "I don't think that mutuus is a newly invasive, it is very likely overlooked.... I would make a regulare BG page, because it is know from MX, and therefore its natural distribution is at least bordering the US, but very likely it is naturally found in the US."
