Baton Rouge, Staring Lane near Highland Road, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 27, 2007
Size: body length 18.9 mm.
This larva or rat-tailed maggot as it is sometimes called, was discovered crawling out of a rarely used sink drain. It was placed in the water end of a tilted tray that contained a gradient ranging from water to wet, then dry dirt. It immediately burrowed into the dirt. On 12 August, after 16 days it emerged and appears to be a syrphid fly which we have identified as Meromacrus acutus.
Confirmation/correction of ID would be appreciated.
