Thanks to both of you! New species for me and other folks in Maryland. Just received the new northeastern flower fly book today; it seems to refer to this as C. plesius. Not sure why the difference from BugGuide.net.

I believe Chalcosyrphus plesia is likely, but I am not able to rule out a couple others.
I can't tell if the upper half of the metacoxal is black, or just in shadows. I am assuming the halters aren't yellow, or would be visible.

Would prefer confirmation before placing at species level.
