Native or Non-Native Insect? - Brothylus gemmulatus
Sierra Pelona foothills (near Lancaster, CA), LA County, California, USA
June 7, 2019
I found this crawling on the inside of a window in my house a couple hours ago (yikes!). Guesses from people I texted this photo to are: Cicada and Cricket. My first impression at a distance on the window was that of some type of winged wood borer. The insect, which is gray/brown in color with speckled wings that appear more opaque than transparent, appears to have long antennae and a small ovipositor (does not resemble any cricket that I've seen). It is pictured in a small glass cup, where it has been observed lifting its wings to resemble hunched shoulders. It will likely die soon if I do not release it. However, before I do any such thing I want to verify that it is a native species and not an agriculture pest as I live not far from orchards and the LA County forest in the foothills near the Antelope Valley (elevation under ~4,000'). My concern in releasing it stems from the fact that I shop quite a bit online, including the occasional live plant/tree, so I can't exclude the possibility that it hitched a ride in a shipping box.
