Monarch egg?
Looks a bit like a Monarch egg that is about to hatch... plus, the plant looks like it might be from a milkweed.

It is milkweed, but it definitely is not a monarch cat. There is a picture of the Caterpillar as well posted with these. What a bummer this was frassed. I had potentially ID'd it as silver spotted skipper, just hatched, I believe (but it was so long ago I'd have to look it up again in my book). I had a book that had a similar looking caterpillar as that.

 
Crop photos
If you can crop the photos to show more of the egg/caterpillar I can move it back to ID request. Any other photos could be helpful too. This seems to be an unlikely larval host of silver-spotted skipper, but if you have a source for it that would help.
