Caterpillar3952 - Petrophora subaequaria

Caterpillar3952 - Petrophora subaequaria
Ward Pound Ridge, Westchester County, New York, USA
July 9, 2005
I thought it might be a geometer but I did find a couple catocaline examples that were similar.

Moved
Moved from Geometrid Moths. This looks exactly like the image in Wagner's Geometroid caterpillar book, pg 116, so we'll move it there.

Thanks
Nice, way to stick with this one! The description given seems to be perfect as well. Too bad it's not on a fern but I'll bet it was in fact close to ferns and it jumped to where I photographed it.

When you mentioned this species before, I tried googling it without success. I wasn't aware that Wagner had a Geometroid caterpillar book but now that I know, I see that archive.org and hathitrust.org have it online.

We looked at this with Laci and we can only see one pair
of abdominal prolegs, on A6, pointing toward Geometridae. We would suggest Petrophora subaequaria, feeds on ferns. Was there bracken nearby?

Yes
Yes, I know there would have been ferns close by but it was so long ago that I don't recall how close. I was in a grassy area and the closest fern may have been inches away or as much as 50 feet away.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I should move this back to Geometridae.

[Edit - I had to refresh my memory as to why I thought it could be in or close to Caenurgina. My thinking was that because of the angle we might not be able to see prolegs on A5 but I'm pretty sure there aren't any to be seen.]

Moved to Butterflies and Moths (Lepidoptera)
Moved from Geometrid Moths.

I can't see all the prolegs and this looks suspiciously like some of the Caenurgina images in the Guide.
