9500 Giant Sunflower [Maritime] Borer ??? - Plagiomimicus

9500 Giant Sunflower [Maritime] Borer ??? - Plagiomimicus
Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma, USA
August 30, 2007
It came to UV light near pond in wooded area of a flood plain.
My best match is 9500 Giant Sunflower [Maritime] Borer - Papaipema maritima,
here MPG1 and here MPG2

Moved to Plagiomimicus
Moved from Frothy Moth.

See comments below. Although I'm leaning toward heitzmani, I moving to genus for now. Feel free to correct me on this.

ID Question
How is P. heitzmani eliminated?

Thank you Steve
Thank you for pointing that out. Actually, I think P. heitzmani fits better. The postmedial line is more straight than in spumosum. Also the subterminal area has the same color as the medial area. In spumosum the subterminal area is usually lighter than medial area.

9741.1 - Plagiomimicus heitzmani?

I think it is Plagiomimicus s
I think it is Plagiomimicus spumosum (Noctuidae: Stiriinae: Stiriini) - Hodges' List #9748

update 7 Dec 2008
After looking at many more Plagiomimicus and Papaipema photos, I think this is a Papaipema species but still can't choose between maritima and necopina.

A copy of this photo has been placed under P. maritima at MPG; I wonder how the species ID was determined?

Looking at those two pages
...maritima looks good ...but so do necopina and silphii. Assuming some amount of variation among these species, I don't know how to rule out any of them.

silphii has a purpilish tinge
silphii has a purpilish tinge, and it feeds on Prairie Dock (Silphium). It's a rarer moth, and will only be found in vicinity to large groves of the Dock. While I can't rule it out, it's probably not silphii.
