Old Wanup Road, Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada., Ontario, Canada

Size: 5 cm
iNaturalist AI placed this into the genus Okanagana. There are two species that are candidates: O. canadensis and O. rimosa (according tomthe range maps in gbif.org). This would be a minor range extension, IF gbif is a representation of its current known range.

It is an Okanagana, but I'm not going to try and give you a species: they're not an easy group unless you have a song and specimen to go with it. Ontario isn't a range extension (there's data you don't have access to and neither apparently does gbif). They're actually found all the way to Nova Scotia. I'm just starting my field season to collect the California taxa for analysis. Be very wary of using iNaturalist for insect ID (especially at species level).

Thank you. FTR I don't consider provincial boundaries when I mention range extensions. Ontario spans from the Carolinean forest region to treeless sub-arctic. But I'm beginning to gather gbif.org may not have enough access to records to provide an accurate biogeographic maps. It will improve as more electronic catalogues are shared. If I observe something that is > 100 km north of the next known location, I flag it as a possible range extension.

In any case, thank you for verifying the genus, I'll take your word that this cannot be ident. further.

I'm getting some more reference material in by the end of September and should be able to sort it out. I'll definitely come back to this one.
