Big-Eyed Toad Bug - Gelastocoris oculatus

Big-Eyed Toad Bug - Gelastocoris oculatus
Jordan Lake--Martha's Chapel causeway, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA
May 7, 2005
Size: circa 8 mm
Found hopping around on the sand alone, though near several Cicindela repanda. The bug was really hard to spot--I only saw it when it hopped, then the remarkable distruptive pattern made it seem to disappear. Identification is based on other images in the guide and on references in the guide page for this species. This would appear to be the only species in this genus in the area.
