Entognatha

Isn't it time that we do something about Entognatha?
Frans Janssens explained that it is a paraphyletic assemblage almost two years ago. Tree of Life doesn't use this taxon for this reason. Apparently Diplura is more closely related to insects than to the two other members of "Entognatha".
I worry that Frans comment on the info page will be lost now that comments get eliminated with editing.
Here is his entire comment:
"Entognatha is a paraphyletic assemblage.
Hi Troy, pls note that in more recent classifications the entognath Collembola, Diplura and Protura are Classes of its own and independent from each other. They are not phylogenetically related. Entognathy in these classes evolved independently and differently.
See collembola.org for more details."

Class order
I considered trying to figure out a phylogenetic order of classes, but (1) every possible order has been proved incorrect, (2) for usability we want the common groups on the first page of arthropods (insects and spiders are the first two groups now).

Collembola done
I created class Collembola and the three North American orders listed on collembola.org. All families have moved. According to collembola.org, family Cyphoderidae has been demoted to a subfamily of Paronellidae. I moved it to Entomobryomorpha still as a family.

The automatic editing record was lost when I created the new pages above the family level. Anybody whose text I copied who wants to be memorialized in the official edit history, edit the page to remove your name from "remarks." That is an edit and will cause your name to appear among the editors.

Can somebody with root privilege move node 168282, checklist of the Collembola, to the new Class page? It's easy enough to create a new link but that would lose any references to the old.

It will take a few minutes to hours for the system to notice that I pulled the rug out from under all the images and move them to their new homes. Don't panic, yet, if you see blank under collembola.

The three old pages (order and suborder) still exist with no images. We can revert back by moving the families and swapping the names of the Globular Springtails pages. (I had to rename the old one to create the new one at a higher rank.) Once we are sure there is nothing left in the old pages and we won't go back, they can be deleted.

What is the plan
for Diplura and Protura?

I don't have a plan
I'm waiting to see what surprising consequences there might be of the first change.

One I thought of: there are lots of off-site links pointing at the old page (e.g. Google). It would be nice to have a forwarding page once the old one is deleted instead of the blank page not found page.

Still...
The other two groups are so wee and inconsequential that it seems like there would be no further harm (if any has been done) in moving them as well.

Done
The system requires an order between a class and a family. I created orders Rhabdura and Dicellurata within Diplura. Appropriate experts should be enlisted to review each of the three new hierarchies for correctness (content of class page, set of order pages, and assignment of families to orders).

It's been more than a month
...since your original post, and there have been no objections, but wouldn't it be easier to let John change the 3 Orders into Classes "automatically"? Should we wait for him to comment? Should we email him?

Let John do it
There have been other major changes suggested recently along with this one, so it is better to let John handle them all. I just e-mailed him.

Comments, anyone?
Nobody has commented on this suggestion, yet. I will wait for a couple of weeks and, if there is no objection, I will follow Frans' advice and change the guide.
If I can't do it by myself I will holler for help, though.

If it's just a matter of
elevating those 3 Orders to the rank of Class, I'm sure John VanDyk could do it easily enough. I think that route would be preferable to an editor creating 3 new pages and copying all the info from the old pages (while losing current contributors' names and links), then moving all the subordinate taxa to the new pages.

I get the impression that nobody cares much whether Entognatha gets turfed, but still it wouldn't hurt to wait another 2-3 weeks.

I care
Seeing as how I plan to go into insect phylogenetics, I actually do care about having the guide be accurate from a scientific point of view. I just posted on the "Apterygote" issue as well. While I am an editor, I don't think I can change the Entognatha to the way it should be, or I would. I can't believe nobody has brought this up in the time that has elapsed between now and Frans' comments
