Webster Village, Harford County, Maryland, USA

Approximately same sized as House Fly. Attracted to MV lamp at night. Zoom in to see gray thorax marked with black dots of various sizes.

Male
What in the heck has he got stuck on the end of his abdomen, wow?! It's certainly not an ovipostor.
He looks like...
Pseudotephritis approximata: ♂ (eastern)

Happy to see you?
The male sex organs of Tephritoidea have a lump-on-a-stick appearance.

Lump-on-a-stick
It looks like a plastic plug for an inflatable toy. Whataweapon!

Good call
Thanx, Bob. Wing pattern certainly looks right for P. approximata (and not other Pseudotephritis species). No idea what's going on with the abdominal "extension".
