Great Golden Digger Wasp dragging cricket - Sphex ichneumoneus

Great Golden Digger Wasp dragging cricket - Sphex ichneumoneus
Griffith Park, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 13, 2019
Size: 3 cm. approx.
On a recently graded dirt slope next to a grassy area, I noticed several colorful wasps. This one was carrying something heavy. It looked like a pale grey cricket, easily twice the size of the wasp. He kept trying to climb up short stems and use them to launch into flight, but was unsuccessful. I followed as he used his wings to drag the cricket along the ground, eventually arriving at a small hole into which he disappeared.
