Not Cyrtopogon with the closed r1 cell, and I don't know of any jet black Asilinae / Ommatiinae in Iowa, which leaves only Laphriinae. Hard to tell with the dark lighting and only the top angle, but the black sclerites and white hairs on the legs and sides of the tergites look like it's probably Laphria sicula. Any side shots (and especially shots of the genitalia?)

better light and a side shot of the whole insect. It may be Cyrtopogon falto.

These are good shots, but the wing veins are not showing up well, against the dark background. You might want to re-image one of the wings and then add it in here. (just a suggestion)
