beetle - Notiophilus

beetle - Notiophilus
Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
February 13, 2008
Unfortunately, this was the only shot I was able to get of this guy before it disappeared. maybe 4mm long.

Carabid
clear enough to genus - Notiophilus sp., those huge eyes are a giveaway

Notiophilus sp.
This carabid genus is uncommon in most regions. Three species known in SC. Best to consult Janet Ciegler's key to SC Carabidae. Visible clues in photo relevant to species ID are dark femur, pale tibia, less constricted pronotum all of which point away from N. aeneus, the most familiar species in my area.

suspect N. biguttatus
i'm afraid, after this one made it to the New World there's no stopping it, so the genus will soon become common -- at the expense of some locals, i'm sorry to say. N. biguttatus is one of the commonest carabids in both urban and rural areas in Europe

thanks much
...I'd not come across these before (that I know of).
