Wasp cocoon? attached to caterpillar - Apanteles

Wasp cocoon? attached to caterpillar - Apanteles
Atco, Camden County, New Jersey, USA
July 20, 2019
Size: Cocoon 5mm?
Found on young winged sumac.
Caterpillar is Fall Webworm (Hyphantria cunea).

Moved
Moved from Braconid and Ichneumonid Wasps.

Microgastrine parasitoids of the fall webworm include Apanteles diacrisiae and Apanteles hyphantriae.

Moved

Probably a Microgastrinae cocoon…
Collect both, put them in a sealed jar, and see what emerges.

See reference here.

It's too late now...
When I went back around 10:30 am and cocoon was already empty!
Dead caterpillar was fell to the ground...
And I corrected size of cocoon from 7mm to 5mm.

Right - lesson for next time...
And there will be a next time.
