Look for color pattern on femor & lack of stripe on top of folded wing cover (Ferguson).

Melanoplus yarrowi - I think
At some angles it is frustrating to try and figure out which one it is, but the coloration on M. thomasi is usually much more vivid and contrasting, and the pattern on the hind femur is different. You can't see the upper side of the folded wings here, but on M. thomasi there is a pair of converging pale stripes along the upper edge, and on M. yarrowii the top is sometimes entirely paler, but usually no contrasting stripes are there.

angles
Some angles are definitely better for identification, but I think all angles are great, since they show different aspects of the insects. Some insects are never shown with some of the best sides showing. For instance, see how many underside shots you find of an Earwig or Wakingstick. Those shots may not be great for identification (though sometimes they are), but they are still really cool to see.

Ventral views
I've learned that a ventral view on Velvet Ants; some spiders; and on tortois beetles is sometimes essential for identification. I took a couple classes in Drafting and can readily appreciate the value of different views of the Critters.
