Size: 1 mm
I teased apart the end of the tunnel with pins - here is the dessicated 1 mm larva (?) I found. I think that the head is at the bottom of the photo and the posterior end has two small projections at the top... I don't suppose that we can even identify the order? It looks more like an insect than a mite or other arthropod to me?

Order
The possible suspects for leaf mines are moths, flies, beetles, and sawflies. No sawflies make linear mines, and very few beetles do. If you're right about which way the larva is facing, this could be a fly larva, but I think it's more likely a moth larva facing the other way.
