I would never have guessed...
To me it resembled a coccinellid pupa :-) Did you collect and rear it?

 
No, I didn't raise it
but Eric Eaton found it and was quite sure of what it was. If it looks like a coccinellid pupa it's a fault of the photo (-grapher) - it's much larger, hangs from a long neck, was found under the bark - all very unlike a coccinellidae.

 
Ha, ha.
I just searched through 53 pages of bugguide lady*beetles looking for some black pupae hanging head down like this one on the end of a stalk composed of their larval skin. Nothing! Maybe I dreamed it.

 
But we do have them in
leaf beetles!

 
For heaven's sake,
