I like Passalids, never seen one yet!

They're fairly common around my area...
I had a couple of pieces of old decaying firewood in my backyard and found this beetle right under the bark. I shot the images in my garage. The neatest thing about this beetle is the hissing/buzzing sound it makes when you pick it up.

'Tis a beauty and built like a small tank.

Hissing Sound
The hissing sound they make is quite loud, isn't it? I was amazed that such a big sound came from something so (relatively) small.

Yes...
It almost sounds like a buzzing/hissing. This beetle was quite docile and easily handled. Could have been because of the cold temps though.

weird group
One of the few (beetle) families that doesn't make it out to California. They are here in Kansas, so I'll keep my hopes up. I wonder how they produce the hissing sound

The sound...
is more of an electronic buzzing or hissing which is the best way I can think of to describe it. Pick one up in a quiet room and you'll see what I mean. It almost sounds like a little tiny muffled male cicada :^)

This Year
If I come across one this year, I'm bringing it in to my portable studio and recording it. I saw a link on BugGuide asking for audio contributions and that's where I'll post it. Here's that link: Audio/Video
