Going through the images in Owlet Caterpillars, I was struck by the distinct similarity of your image with Anterastria teratophora (especially the thin wavy line below the wide straight line). Which makes me want to ask if you actually saw the caterpillar feeding on phlox and is there any native mint very nearby?

I didn't see the caterpillar feeding on phlox. Seemed to just be traveling. No mint nearby!

Don, the match is too good with Anterastria to be anything else (especially the increased and particular pattern of squiggles in the thin line toward the rear). When you say there was no mint nearby, can we assume that also means no horsemint or beebalm (Monarda)? If you don't have Owlet Caterpillars at hand, check out my caterpillar images here at BG and you'll see why I'm so convinced that's what this is.

Jim, there is beebalm very close to where the photo was taken. Checked the BG images and it sure looks like my guy!

OK. I no longer am thinking Hypena (for more than one reason). Of course the presence on Phlox may have been happenstantial. No other ideas here.

Thank youJim.
