Sorry for the poor orientation of the photo--I didn't think to try to get pictures of its head or tail end. Note the two longer black projections at one end.

Surely Dryocampa. Those black spines are pretty distinctive.

Rosy Maple Moth?
Looks like it could be the caterpillar of Dryocampa rubicunda in the Saturniidae. Should be confirmed by an expert, though.

Thanks--I have the Caterpillars of North America book--nothing in there looked like this--but there is so much variability. Mostly just curious about it. I'm also afraid I don't have enough detail for an actual ID--anyway--it does look like images from online--thanks so much!! We'll probably never be 100%-but this helps a lot.
